Polus Capital Management

Polus Capital Management is an investment management firm specialising in alternative credit strategies. Polus invests across the capital structure and liquidity spectrum and focuses on three complementary strategies: Leveraged Credit, Special Situations and Structured Credit. These strategies are pursued through a range of investment vehicles designed for institutional investors including pension funds, insurance companies, endowments, foundations, funds of funds and family offices. As at 31 August 2023, Polus has approximately $9.5 billion of assets under management. Polus was launched in 2022 following the strategic combination of two established European credit managers, Cairn Capital (“Cairn”) and Bybrook Capital (“Bybrook”). Cairn was founded in 2004 with backing from the Royal Bank of Scotland (“RBS”) and primarily focused on performing credit strategies across leveraged loans and structured credit. In December 2015, Mediobanca S.p.A. (“Mediobanca”) purchased a majority stake in Cairn from RBS. Mediobanca is a publicly listed diversified financial services group based in Italy. Bybrook was founded in 2014 with backing from Blackstone and focused on opportunistic credit and special situations/distressed debt. In February 2021, Cairn and Bybrook agreed to a merger to capitalise on the investment synergies between the two organisations. The transaction closed in August 2021. In November 2022, following completion of the integration, the company rebranded to ‘Polus Capital Management’. In Greek mythology, Polus was the Titan associated with intelligence, rational thought, and an inquisitive mind. The rebranding did not in any way reflect a change in underlying investment strategies, personnel or governance structure, all of which remained unchanged.
