Q&A with James Grove, Head of Sales, Americas

What are you responsible for at Preqin?

I am responsible for expanding our business across the Americas, alongside providing operational leadership for Preqin in the region. This involves the development and execution of our strategic plan, all of which is a large team effort and achieved only by our world-class team, industry leading partners, and our inspirational customers.

How has your career progressed since you joined Preqin?

I joined Preqin in our business development team, in London – an exciting role which gave me the opportunity to build our business and travel across the EMEA region. Following this, I moved to sales leadership roles in London, Singapore, and currently in New York. It has been a great journey so far with good challenges and successes along the way.

How did you first get involved in financial services?

Prior to Preqin, I worked for a boutique financial recruitment consultancy in London. This provided a good training ground and gave me an understanding of how the financial ecosystem fits together, alongside a fast-tracked understanding of business; in a boutique you wear many hats.

What advice would you give to someone who would like to have a career in Sales at Preqin?

Sales is a people business; you must enjoy learning about others, and have a natural curiosity and drive. I would focus on three things: understand why you are passionate about sales at Preqin; thoroughly research and understand the particulars, matching your unique value and building your plan; take ownership throughout the process and your career.

What’s your favorite thing about working at Preqin?

Talented and supportive colleagues. As a market leader, we cannot afford to rest on our laurels and Preqin is underpinned by a collective ambition across regions and departments. We challenge market norms and operate with a ‘continuous improvement’ culture, supporting one another and creating long-lasting friendships as we go.
