Preqin Markets in Focus: US Real Estate

The US economy is well on its way back following the COVID-19 pandemic, but the consequences are evident in the real estate industry. The aggregate value of private equity real estate deals in the US fell by about half in 2020 compared with 2019. So far this year, hospitality and retail sectors have struggled to find their footing, but residential is well ahead of its peers, with $17bn worth of deals completed. 

Although the pandemic has likely changed real estate forever, property remains an important part of investor portfolios. The industry will need to innovate and adapt to thrive in a market scarred by the social and economic changes wrought by COVID-19.
