Australian Private Capital Market Overview: A Preqin and Australian Investment Council Yearbook 2022

By Preqin

With the Australian Investment Council, we look back at private capital in Australia in 2021 to explore a market working toward long-term recovery, and review how industry stakeholders are adapting. We also examine the trend of consolidation and the growing influence of Australian superannuation funds, which help to accelerate the adoption of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria across investment strategies.

This report leverages Preqin’s data on private capital funds, deals, and capital flows across the private equity, venture capital, private debt, real estate, and infrastructure & natural resources sectors in Australia. Private equity & venture capital (PEVC) remains the dominant asset class with $42bn in assets under management (AUM), while private debt was the fastest-growing, up by 144% from December 2020 to $1.4bn in June 2021. Aside from key data points and insights on each alternative asset class, this year’s report includes a new section on inbound investments into Australia, looking at how Australian private capital funds feature in global investors’ portfolios.

This report is part of a partnership with the Australian Investment Council. This newest edition of Australian Private Capital Market Overview continues a long-term strategic partnership between Preqin and the Australian Investment Council to track, record, and disseminate industry data to market participants and the wider business community.
