Tradewinds was founded in 1994 by Robert W. Scannell and Scott P. Peters, and focused on trend-driven value and distressed investments in global emerging markets. Since 1998 Tradewinds moved away from investing in debt and began investing primarily in equities. Its primary client base was high net worth individuals; however they also had a number of institutional clients including foundations and fund of hedge funds.
