Established in Q3 of 1997, SM Investors (SM) is a New York-based hedge fund manager and value investor that focuses on research and was founded by Sal Muoio. The firm practices a disciplined, bottom-up, company-specific, and research-intensive investment approach based upon an optimized blend of three disciplines: the uncovering of securities that sell at a significant discount to intrinsic or private market value coupled with a catalyst that acts to surface value within a two-year time frame, and on the short side, overpriced securities of over-leveraged, increasingly noncompetitive, or deteriorating businesses, work out opportunities, including liquidations and stubs, and selective special situation mergers and other arbitrage opportunities. It is attracted to the securities of domestic, stable, predictable, and free cash-generating businesses. SM has an investment bias toward the media and communications industries.
