Established in Q2 of 2011 by Patrick Quinn, Quinn Opportunity Partners (Quinn) is a Virginia-based hedge fund manager that uses event driven, long/short, and intrinsic value strategies to seek the most efficient risk/reward propositions in the public markets. It believes that its multi-strategy approach positions the fund to generate substantial long-term results in any market environment. Quinn believes event driven investing hinges on the resolution of specific corporate events over a distinct timeframe. According to the firm, corporate events reliably surface in all market environments and include mergers, acquisitions, hostile takeovers, bankruptcies, investigations, lawsuits, regulatory approvals, activist investors, etc. Outcomes are generally independent of stock market fluctuations, and short sale opportunities are often found in these situations. Intrinsic value investments are securities trading at substantial discounts to conservatively estimated values of future cash flow. These opportunities tend to emerge during major market dislocations but have appeared in recent years even as equity markets reach all-time highs. Examples include large U.S. banks trading at record-low valuation ratios in the summer of 2016 and retailers with strong balance sheets priced at 5x free cash flow in 2017. Intrinsic value investments may increase short-term volatility but can be additive to results. It manages a concentrated portfolio and is generally long biased.
