Protea Capital Management, founded in 2019, is a hedge fund manager based in South Africa. The firm initially focused on a diversified portfolio of listed equities on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange, employing both long and short strategies. Over time, its investment mandate expanded to include global publicly listed equities. Protea developed and refined a proprietary quantamental analysis process to guide its investment decisions. Following a period of performance that enabled capital growth, the firm launched a series of hedge funds accessible to public investors, beginning with a partnership in 2016 and followed by additional fund launches in 2017. In 2019, Protea began operating independently as an investment management business.
