Harbinger Capital Partners was a hedge fund manager that focused on event/distressed strategies. Founded in 2001 with Philip Falcone, Harbinger Capital Partners sought to invest in alpha-generating ideas that were uncorrelated to investment cycles. The firm focused on restructurings, liquidations, event-driven situations, turnarounds, capital structure arbitrage, and short sales of securities. The firm had a series of problems in 2012. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2012 for its wireless-network venture LightSquared after the company failed to reach an agreement with its lenders to avoid a default. It was also accused in June 2012 by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of committing securities fraud. As a result, the firm agreed on a deal with the SEC in May 2013 that resulted in it liquidating its hedge fund operation while returning external capital to investors.
