Archstone's main focus is on apartment investment and operations. The company’s portfolio is mainly concentrated on the most affluent areas of Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, the Los Angeles area, the San Diego area, the San Francisco Bay Area, the New York metropolitan area, Seattle and Boston. By the middle of 2008 the company owned or had an ownership position in 418 communities, representing about 70,000 units, including units under construction. In February 2013, Archstone was purchased by Equity Residential and AvalonBay Communities.
