Founded in 2009 by Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick, and based in California, US, Uber Technologies, Inc. (Uber), formerly known as UberCab Inc. , operates as a technology company that offers mobility, delivery, and freight services. As of December 2021, Uber has approximately 29,300 employees globally and operations in approximately 71 countries including the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
In January 2018, Softbank and Dragoneer Investment Group, Sequoia Capital, Tencent, and TPG invested USD 1. 25 billion in Series G funding for a minority stake in Uber Technologies. In May 2019, Uber Technologies raised USD 8. 1 billion in an IPO on the NYSE, trading under the ticker symbol UBER.
Also, in 2020 sold Elevate flying taxi division to Joby Aviation and in 2021, Uber's self-driving unit (ATG Business) to Aurora Innovation Inc. As of 2022, the company is led by its founder and CEO Dara Khosrowshah who also founded Red Swoosh. Uber Technologies, Inc. has three operating segments; mobility, delivery, and freight.
The mobility segment provides rides in a variety of vehicles, including cars, auto-rickshaws, motorbikes, minibusses, taxis, and Uber for business. The delivery segment, allows consumers to search for local grocery and convenience stores, and restaurants, order a meal or groceries, and either pick up or have it delivered through Uber Eats. And the freight segment connects carriers with shippers ranging from small/medium-sized businesses to global enterprises on Uber's platform and gives carriers upfront and the ability to book a shipment. In 2020, Uber Technologies generated USD 11.
14 billion in revenue.
