Based in Melbourne, Australia, and founded in 1888 by Albert Toll, Toll Holdings Ltd. provides freight transport services. The company began in Newcastle, Australia, operating as a transport company with a fleet of trucks. The Toll family sold the company to National Minerals in 1959 and in the decade following, it became part of mining conglomerate Peko Wallsend, which used the Toll business for the transport activities of its entire operations.

Under Peko Wallsend, the Toll business was developed into a national carrier. It later rebranded as Toll-Chadwick, as it sought to integrate its businesses and expand into containerized shipping. In 1986, Toll Holdings Ltd. was bought back by its management team, led by then Managing Director Paul Little and Toll's first Chairman, Peter Rowsthorn.

Under their leadership, the company's business expanded through acquisitions, and by 1993, the company completed its initial public offering on the Australian Stock Exchange. In May 2015, Japan Post fully acquired Toll Holdings Ltd. , becoming a division of Japan Post while still retaining the Toll brand. The company is currently being led by its Managing Director, Thomas Knudsen.
