Sainsbury's Bank plc

Based in London, UK, and founded in 1997, Sainsbury's Bank plc is a commercial bank that is wholly owned by J Sainsbury plc, a national supermarket chain. It was initially established as a joint venture between Sainsbury's and the Bank of Scotland. In 2007, it became a 50:50 joint venture with Halifax Bank of Scotland, later Lloyds Banking Group. Eventually, J Sainsbury plc was able to take full control of the bank when it paid Lloyds Banking Group GBP 248m for the remaining 50% of Sainsbury's Bank it does not already own.

As of July 2025, the firm is being led by Robert Mulhall as its CEO. Sainsbury's Bank plc offers a variety of commercial banking services including loans, credit cards, savings, insurance, travel programs, mortgages, loyalty programs, and customer support. It offers fintech products such as digital wallets, credit card apps, as well as online loan applications. The bank earns income through fees and commissions, ATM interchange fees, and insurance introduction commission receivable from insurance partners.

It earns income on credit card and ATM interchange fees, and from transaction-based fees which are charged to the customer’s account. Also, it generates revenue from the sale of insurance policies underwritten by a third party.
