Established in 2017 and based in Shenzhen, China, Origin Space is an asteroid mining company that focuses on development of space mineral resources. The founder as well as the CEO, Meng Su, is an Associate Professor, Department of Physics, The University of Hong Kong. In October 2019, it raised CNY 50 million of angel funding from new investors Linear Venture and Matrix Partners China. In July 2020, the company cooperated with Nanjing University to launch the "Lobster Eye" X-ray detection satellite.
Origin Space mainly provides satellite remote sensing monitoring services, including environment, agriculture, water conservancy, smart cities, carbon sink benefit monitoring and evaluation, ocean, and meteorological disaster monitoring. Its products are NEO-X space mining robot, Yangwang-1 space telescope, and M² lunar rover. The Yangwang-1 space telescope can be used to detect and monitor asteroids and space debris, as well as conduct astronomical observations. The company generates revenue by offering data, technology, resource support and business solutions for space activities.
