Based in Michigan, US, and founded in 2010, Material Sciences Corporation, formerly known as New Star Metals, Inc. , operates as a materials technology company. The company was formed through the merger of Premier Resource Group, Electric Coating Technology, and U. S.
Metals and Supply from Northern Steel Group forming New Star Metals, Inc. In 2012, Insight Equity acquired New Star Metals from Aurora Capital Partners. In January 2014, New Star Metals, acquired the original Material Sciences Corporation for USD 139 million. As a result, MSC was delisted from NASDAQ.
Then in 2015, New Star Metals changed its name to Material Sciences Corporation (MSC), and in 2019, Northleaf Capital Partners and Sky Island Capital acquired Material Sciences Corporation. Pat Murley serves as the CEO of the company as of 2021. MSC’s product line includes deco steel, magnadamo, MSC smart steel, quiet aluminum, quiet steel, replikote, and soundtrap. Deco steel is a laminate of a thin stainless steel metal skin, cold-rolled steel, and a structural core that is used in automotive stainless-steel solutions and consumer applications.
Magnadamp is a magnetic constrained layered product used in automotive and appliance vibration damping, such as roof panels, door outers, and quarter panels. MSC smart steel is a lightweight multilayer steel laminate used for manufacturing stamped parts. Quiet aluminum is a lightweight damping alternative to aluminum panels used for stamped aluminum applications. In addition, the company offers custom coating and laminated product solutions and services, such as coil coatings, laminates, composites, strippable films, electro galvanizing, value-added processing, and supply chain management.
