Based in Zurich, Switzerland, and founded by Anian Schreiber in 2017, Koa Switzerland AG a. k. a KOA is an ag-tech company that upcycles and specializes in repurposing cocoa pulp. In May 2022, Koa raised USD 4.
7 million in Series A funding led by new investor Haltra Group, with participation from other unspecified investors. The funding was part of a larger USD 10 million equity and debt round. The company was co-founded by Group Finance Director of Koa, Benjamin Kuschnik. Koa offers cocoa pulp byproducts from the chocolate industry as value-added to the food and beverage industry for applications ranging from chocolate, confectionery, and ice cream to drinks.
Koa reduces on-farm food waste around the cocoa fruit and generates additional farmer income while at the same time bringing unique new ingredients. The company plans to use the 2022 funding to build a new production plant in Akim Achiase, in the Eastern Region of Ghana, and scale its production capabilities tenfold which will allow the company to cooperate with an additional 10,000 cocoa smallholders in Ghana. Additionally, Koa aims to create gender-equal employment opportunities in rural communities and plans to reach 40% of women farmers.
