Based in Sarine, Switzerland, and founded in 2022 by co-founders Lukas Schertel, Wadood Hamad, Silvia Vignolini, and Oliver Polcher, Impossible Materials GmbH, aka Impossible Materials, provides plant-based formulation ingredients. Impossible Materials is focused on turning cellulose into functional ingredients to replace heavy metal materials in existing markets. In April 2023, Impossible Materials GmbH raised CHF 3. 4 million in seed funding led by Mission Possible, Big Idea Ventures, Cambridge Enterprise, Capital Risque Fribourg, EFI Lake Geneva Ventures ICAV, Apprecia Capital, Venture Kick, and Inter IKEA Group.

Impossible Materials offers a biocompatible and renewable alternative, that gives plant-based chicken and fish their white color to match the look of their animal counterparts. The company uses an ultra-thin, white structure found in the scales of the Cyphochilus beetle to create a sustainable white. The company serves different sectors of industries such as cosmetics, pets, food, coatings, paints, pharmaceuticals, and more.
