raised USD 70 million in series F funding from new investor Illumina, Inc. and in May 2021, Soaring Eagle Acquisition Corp. , a special purpose acquisition company, agreed to acquire Ginkgo BioWorks, Inc.  As of April 2026, the company is led by its CEO Jason Kelly.


The company operates a software platform that uses advanced robotic automation, data analytics, and genetic engineering to program and produce living cells like bacteria with industrial applications ranging from cheesemaking to medicine. Ginkgo Bioworks designs, engineers, develops, tests, and licenses microorganisms that can be used by other companies as microbial products for flavors, sweeteners, cosmetic ingredients, crop treatments, and pharmaceuticals.   After the acquisition by Soaring Eagle Acquisition Corp. , the company plans to become a publicly listed company.


In 2021, Ginkgo expects to generate USD 150 million in revenue, which is approximately 96% growth compared to 2020.
