Founded in 2012 and based in California, US, Fauna, Inc. is a technology company that built and operates FaunaDB, a cloud‑based database designed for application developers. The company focused to store and manage application data at global scale without running database infrastructure. In July 2020, Fauna, Inc.

raised USD 27 million in series A funding led by Madrona Venture Group, including Addition, GV, CRV and Quest Venture Partners. The company shut down its managed service and discontinued the live platform in May 2025. Fauna’s main product is FaunaDB, a serverless, cloud‑based operational database built for modern application developers. It allows developers to store data as JSON documents while also supporting relational features such as joins, schema enforcement, and strong ACID transactions.

FaunaDB is accessed entirely through APIs and used a proprietary query language called FQL (Fauna Query Language). The service automatically handled scaling, global replication, and security, removing the need for database infrastructure management. In addition to the hosted service, Fauna provided client libraries (drivers), command‑line tools, and documentation. After shutting down the managed service in May 2025, Fauna released its core database technology, drivers, and tools as open source for the developer community.

Fauna generates revenue by offering paid subscription plans for its managed database service. Customers paid to use the hosted FaunaDB platform.
