Based in Osaka, Japan, and founded in 2021 by CEO Hiroto Kimura, and CTO Tomoaki Yokoyama, Eight knots Inc. designs and develops an autonomous navigation system for water mobility using robotics and artificial intelligence technology. In October 2024, Eight Knot Inc. raised an undisclosed amount in pre-series A funding led by new investor Spiral Capital with participation from other new investors DRONE FUND, ITOCHU Technology Ventures, Oriental Land Innovations, QB Capital, Kyokuyo Shipbuilding Co.
, Ltd, and IWAKITEC. This round was part of a larger JPY 760 million equity and debt financing. Eight Knot provides autonomous navigation technology called "Eight Knot AI Captain" which uses advanced technologies such as robotics and AI for water mobility. The technology offers Autopilot assist function, sensor-based detection for obstacles, and automated cautious maneuvering for small vessels.
The company plans to use the August 2023 funding to strengthen the sales and business development of its marine products business, and expand its market presence.
