About

Digitip, based in Durban, South Africa, provides a digital payment platform designed to enable informal sector workers to receive electronic tips, thereby facilitating cashless transactions in a traditionally cash-based environment. Digitip is a digital payment service that allows informal labourers to accept tips electronically. Founded in 2023 in Durban, South Africa, the company has completed a total of 1 deal. As of September 2025, Digitip was acquired by Street Wallet for an undisclosed amount, aiming to enhance digital financial solutions for informal traders.

Digitip offers a digital payment solution specifically aimed at empowering informal sector labourers, allowing them to receive tips electronically via the Zapper payment platform. This service provides informal workers, such as parking attendants and car washers, with a unique Zapper code displayed on a lanyard, enabling customers to make cashless payments directly to them. By facilitating digital payments, Digitip seeks to incorporate informal sector workers into the expanding cashless economy, particularly in urban areas in South Africa, where cash transactions are common. Digitip generates revenue through transaction fees for digital payments made by customers using the Zapper platform.

When a customer tips a labourer via the Zapper app, the funds are transferred to the labourer’s FNB E-Wallet account. The pricing structure for these transactions is determined through Digitip's partnership with Zapper, which charges a fee deducted from the total tips collected by the labourers weekly. This service enables customers to support informal workers and enhances their financial inclusion in the digital payment ecosystem. In September 2025, following its acquisition by Street Wallet, Digitip plans to expand its digital payment solutions for informal workers.

The acquisition aims to improve financial access through the integration of tipping technology. Future product development is expected to focus on enhancing the existing service offering while exploring new regional markets to bring digital financial solutions to informal labourers.
