Founded in 1995, chaired by Hariolf Kottmann as Executive Chairman and headquartered in Muttenz, Switzerland, Clariant International Ltd is a provider of specialty chemicals to be used in the agricultural industry, automotive and transportation industry, aviation, building, and construction industry along with chemical intermediaries, coatings, paints and inks; consumer goods; digital printing; electronics; food and beverage; home care; and personal care among others. The company’s products that meet sustainability standards are labeled the EcoTain® label. As of 2021, the company employs over 21,000 employees. In 2013, the company acquired CRM International SAS to join its Industrial and Consumer Specialities (ICS) business unit.
In 2017, Clariant acquired Huntsman Corp. for USD 6. 4 billion. The company’s product business is split into seven segments: Additives supplying flame retardants; Catalysts supplying catalyst solutions for use in the chemical, plastics, and oil and gas industry; Functional Minerals offering bentonite and synthetic material-based specialty products and solutions, and Industrial and Consumer Specialities providing specialty chemicals and application solutions for consumer care.
Additionally, the Oil and Mining Services segment offers chemicals for specialty oilfield production chemicals for mineral processing, customized solutions for the end-to-end mining process, specific ore applications such as zinc, gold, nickel, and lithium, along with refinery services; Pigments segment supplying pigment preparation, colorants, and dyes; and other new businesses such as biotech and bio-based chemicals and VitiSpheres®.
