Based in North Carolina, US, and founded in 2020, Avalo, Inc. operates as a biotech company that helps plants adapt to different climates through gene discovery and control. In March 2025, Avalo, Inc. raised USD 11 million in series A funding co-led by new investors Germin8 Ventures and Alexandria Venture Investments, with participation from other new investors CCEP Ventures, Trust Ventures, and Trailhead Capital.

Returning investors At One Ventures, Better Ventures, SOSV, Climate Capital Syndicate, individual, and other unspecified investors also participated in the round. Avalo utilizes machine learning to accelerate plant production and crop development. It uses an AI-powered genome analysis that reduces the time and money it takes to breed hardier plants for hot temperatures. Avalo also uses molecular biology tools and works with partners to develop and produce new elite varieties.

The company has built a model for simulating the effects of changes to a plant’s genome, which they claim can reduce that 15-year lead time to two or three and the cost by a similar ratio. Avalo plans to offer the data handling service to the more established companies like agriculture and pharmaceuticals and will be able to help bring a few of these plants into agriculture and become a seed provider as well. The company will use the March 2025 funding to support the launch of its platform.
