Founded in 2019 and based in Minas Gerais, Brazil, Afya Limited, formed through the merger of NRE Educacional and Medcel Editora e Eventos SA, provides undergraduate and graduate courses for students. iClinic is wholly owned by Afya and as of 2021, the company's CEO is Virgilio Gibbon. Afya is backed by Crescera Investimentos and as of 2021, it has 5,260 employees. In 2019 the company became a public company, trading under ticker symbol AFYA on the NASDAQ, and in April 2021, SoftBank agreed to invest in the firm.
The company is comprised of two segments: the education services segment and residency preparatory and specialization programs segment. The residency and specialization segment offers courses for medical residency and prerequisite exams, specialization titles, and diploma revalidation. Its education portfolio courses include management, dentistry, law, engineering, nursing, psychology, and accounting sciences among others. Also, Afya's brands include Uniptan, Epimed, Medcel, and Uni Novafapi.
In its fiscal year ended in December 2020, Afya Limited generated BRL 1. 2 billion in revenue and had an EBITDA of BRL 563 million, and a net income of BRL 308 million. The company plans to use the proceeds from April 2021 investment to fund future acquisitions and investments in complementary businesses, products, or technologies.
