Vinci Partners improved their understanding of the alternatives market to build a system that could identify and evaluate potential investors aligned to their strategy, positively impacting their growth.
By leveraging Preqin’s extensive performance data, Vinci was also able to benchmark their firm against global peers to outperform the industry standard. Vinci’s ability to continuously deliver strong returns granted investors confidence in both their firm and the opportunities unique to the Brazilian market.
The Challenge: Improving market and investor visibility
Operating in a highly challenging global environment and up against the very best asset managers in the world, Vinci Partners needed to improve their visibility of the investor landscape, especially to rival foreign competitors. This included everything from data around investor profiles and portfolio performance, to fund manager selection criteria and regional preferences.
Access to this information was considered integral to future growth, as the organization was seeking to further expand their international LP base by finding international or foreign prospects open to investment in a developing market, such as Brazil. To do so, Vinci Partners was tasked with raising awareness on both the Brazilian market and their firm to a global audience.
With ambitious fundraising goals, it was imperative that Vinci attracted sophisticated allocators worldwide capable of large capital commitments. To achieve their objectives, Vinci also needed to better understand their prospects' investment history, preferences, and return expectations to accurately pinpoint best-fit investors for their fund offerings.
With all these challenges in mind, Vinci was looking for a comprehensive alternatives data provider. The provider needed to not only offer the information Vinci was seeking, but also go one step further and help benchmark their performance on a global scale. From the foreign investor’s perspective, an investment in Brazil is inherently associated with currency risk. Vinci needed to better map the standard level of returns and general performance characteristics (e.g., J-curve, allocation pace, etc.) achieved elsewhere in order to market its products within global standards and compete for capital against managers investing with more stable currencies, such as USD or EUR.
The Solution: Comprehensive Preqin data on a global scale
Vinci needed a data provider that could offer granular datasets on the investors they cared about across geographies and asset classes. Having evaluated the available options, they chose Preqin due to the extensive LatAm datasets available, alongside the platform’s custom benchmarking capabilities that helped them understand their performance in a wider global context.
Preqin data enabled Vinci to build a custom analysis and evaluation scoring tool. This helped them focus their resources on prospects that met their fund product criteria and were most likely to invest in the region.
The system allowed Vinci to find institutional investors previously unknown to them, playing an important supplementary role to their work with placement agents and their well-established network. By using this tool, Vinci was able to reduce a list of over 10,000+ active investors on Preqin to around 400, all of which were more likely to be aligned with their strategic and geographic focus.
Once targets were identified and qualified, Vinci also had access to the contacts they needed to reach out and build relationships with them, either via the Preqin Pro platform, placement agents, or conferences.
The Results: A more targeted strategy and rapid business growth
Vinci incorporated Preqin data into their own systems, helping them create an end-to-end prospect identification and prioritization system. This allowed them to concentrate their resources, positively impacting business growth.
Using Preqin data and the tools available, Vinci was able to pivot to a more data-driven approach. This helped significantly when fundraising for their 2019 flagship private equity fund VCP III, which became the largest Brazil-focused buyout fund from an independent asset manager in over a decade according to Preqin, with the majority of capital sourced from foreign institutional investors.
Preqin data also played a positive role in helping the company with their impact fund VIR IV, which reached its hard cap, despite operating during the pandemic in a very challenging environment. This success is largely due to their disciplined and institutionalized approach, as well as a constant process of benchmarking, to adapt to the needs of the most sophisticated investors globally. Preqin’s dataset allows them to compare themselves against competition operating in a single country, across the whole of Latin America, and even the globe. Furthermore, with Preqin Pro Vinci is always measuring and monitoring the level they must maintain to outperform their direct competitors.
