Q&A with Melina Heinl-Powell, Regional Head of Investor Data, EMEA

“I think the dynamic nature of working in alternative assets is such a draw. One day you’re working on a project around proprietary investor data collection and the next you’re discussing how to build a new product for customers.”

What’s your role at Preqin and what does it entail?

I am the Regional Head of Investor Data for EMEA, a role I stepped into at the beginning of 2024. I’m currently managing three other team leaders, two in London and one in Dubai.

My team and I look after every EMEA investor profile on the Preqin Pro platform and the data within them. The main pillars we work by are growth, data coverage, and completeness. And of course, a high level of data quality! To ensure those pillars, I also lead a small sub-team that focuses solely on building relationships from the ground to expand our investor network with new proprietary contributors.

How has your career progressed since joining Preqin?

I joined Preqin almost seven years ago, as a research associate, or the most junior level. I was the first German speaker on the team, so that quickly gave me the opportunity to work on projects focused on German-speaking countries – a growth area of the business.

When we opened the Frankfurt office in 2022, I built my own team that looked at both investor and fund manager data, specifically in the DACH region. I spent much of 2022 at conferences in DACH countries to build awareness, which was busy but fun.

What’s it like to work in the world of private market data and tech?

I think the dynamic nature of working in alternative assets is such a draw. One day you’re working on a project around proprietary investor data collection and the next you’re discussing how to build a new product for customers.

Within that, it’s about the people. I work with people with a huge variety of skills and backgrounds, and I learn so much as I go. At Preqin, there’s also many team leaders who are women, which isn’t typical in finance or alternatives.

What projects have you been working on recently?

In my new EMEA-wide role, I’ve been working on a lot of new initiatives, particularly around product liaison. As we’ve had a lot of new product launches and updates in 2024, it’s important to me to work closely with our Product and Analytics teams to ensure client voices are heard. It’s great to have the level of cross-team collaboration that we do, as we can help Product, and they can help us in improving investor datasets.

More generally, it’s so exciting seeing the bigger picture of where we’re heading, how we get there, and the benefits for our customers.

What’s the culture like at Preqin in the London office?

I’m part of the DEI committee in London and we recently did a Friendship Day event, where we made bracelets and watched the Paris Olympics together. I think that gives you an idea of the Preqin culture in London. It’s busy and everyone works hard but there’s definitely time to get to know colleagues outside of day-to-day work!

Senior management is also very approachable at Preqin. It doesn’t matter what level you are, which I think can change as companies become larger global firms. But that hasn’t changed at Preqin.
