Private equity is a global phenomenon, and it is interesting to examine different groups of private equity fund managers in order to gain insights into the nature of the private equity industry in different areas and geographies. In a recent edition of our free monthly newsletter Private Equity Spotlight, Preqin examined fund managers based in France, and found some interesting trends.
France is one of the major European and Global centres of private equity, with 130 fund managers currently headquartered in the country, which have raised €103.5 billion in private equity funds during the past 10 years. The majority of fund managers based in France primarily focus on buyout investments, with over half of French private equity firms targeting this investment type. This is followed by 35% focusing on venture capital investments, and 12% targeting other investment types such as mezzanine or turnaround transactions.
When looking at what industries French fund managers seek investments in, we are once again presented with a diversified split. Over half of French private equity fund managers seek investments in IT companies, signalling this as the industry sector targeted by the largest proportion of French firms. This is followed by 41% targeting investments across any sector, which correlates with the fact that the largest proportion of fund managers in the region target buyout investments, as the buyout sector is typically generalist in relation to industry type. In addition, over a quarter of French private equity firms seek investments in a range of other industries, such as the healthcare, industrials, consumer, telecoms and media and business services sectors.
The French private equity market is a prominent and diversified sector, investing across a wide range of investment types and industries.
