Venture Firms investing in China

Preqin’s extensive database shows that there are over 230 venture firms investing in China. 37% of these venture firms are based in China, 29% in the US, 11% in Hong Kong and 5% in the UK. The total estimated available dry powder available to them is USD 168 million.

One of the largest private equity venture firms based in China and targeting the region is SAIF Partners. The Beijing-based private equity firm primarily invests in business services, financial services, communications, consumer services, education, healthcare and manufacturing. Its investment strategies include early stage and expansion/growth.

IDGVC Partners is another significant China-based venture firm. It invests in early to growth-stage companies based in China and Greater China, with a focus on high-tech-related sectors such as internet, telecommunications, and wireless communications. The firm has offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Gaugnzhou and Shenzhen.

China-based New Horizon Capital has raised private equity funds totalling USD 1.49 billion and focuses on growth and expansion stage investment opportunities in Greater China.

Legend Capital was formed in 2001 and is another significant player in the Chinese venture capital industry. The firm focuses its private equity venture investments on mid-market high-growth companies across China. It favours investments in early stage IT firms, including internet and wireless application services, outsourcing and digital media. The firm is currently raising its first RMB-denominated fund which will focus on sectors such as IT applications and services, consumer products, health services, clean technology and advanced manufacturing.
