As of the 10th of August 2009, private equity venture funds have raised $14.4 billion, compared to $34.4 billion raised by 185 venture funds during the same period in 2008. General venture funds, which invest in all stages of a company’s infancy, accounted for over 44% of the aggregate capital raised by the venture market. Over the same period, expansion funds raised over $5 billion and represented 35% of all venture capital. Over 16% of total venture capital commitments were raised by early stage funds. North America focused venture funds accounted for over 63% of aggregate capital raised, while Europe focused funds accounted for approximately 20%. Venture funds focusing on Asia and Rest of World accounted for the remaining 17% of the private equity venture capital market. In terms of venture capital funds on the road, there are currently over 460 funds targeting to raise $91 billion. 225 of these funds have already reached an interim close, raising a total of $23 billion.
