Currently, 543 private equity firms are located in Western Europe with venture capital as their main investment strategy, according to Preqin’s extensive research. The latest data from the Preqin’s Fund Manager Profiles shows that collectively these firms have raised €35.4bn in aggregate capital commitments over the last 10 years and have approximately €11.7bn available in dry powder.
The vast majority of venture capital firms are based in the UK, with 172 firms headquartered in the region. The second highest concentration of firms, 97, is located in Germany. There are a further 70 firms based in France, 47 in the Netherlands, 41 in Spain, and 33 in Switzerland.
The top three venture capital fund managers based in Western Europe, in order of total capital raised over the last 10 years, are Index Ventures, Balderton Capital and Sofinnova Partners.
The largest venture capital firm based within Western Europe is Index Ventures. The Switzerland-headquartered firm was founded in 1996 and is a pan-European venture capital firm primarily focused on investments within the technology and life sciences sectors. The firm has raised €2.6bn over the past decade and currently has an estimated €1.3bn available in dry powder. Index Ventures recently closed their latest fund, Index Ventures VI, an early stage fund focused on investments in innovative companies based in Europe, North America and Israel.
Balderton Capital is the second largest venture capital firm based in Western Europe. The firm is headquartered in the UK and will typically invest in early stages but is open to investment in later stage rounds as well. The firm concentrates investment within European-based companies operating within high-growth technology markets, such as e-commerce, consumer internet and software sectors. Balderton Capital has raised €1.2bn over the past decade and currently has an estimated €321mn available in dry powder.
Sofinnova Partners is a Paris-based venture capital firm specializing in start up and early stage investments within the life sciences and technology sectors primarily in Europe. The firm has raised €932mn in capital commitments over the past decade and currently has approximately €260mn available in dry powder.
