Venture capital firms investing in the MENA region

Preqin’s database profiles over 55 venture capital firms investing in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Of these, 34 are based in the region itself, with 14% of the total based in the United Arab Emirates and 12% in Bahrain. Firms targeting the MENA region have raised funds totalling over USD 67 billion in the last ten years.

Citadel Capital is based in Egypt and is one of the largest venture firms investing in the MENA region. The firm has raised funds worth more than USD 1.8 billion in the last decade and is currently raising the MENA Joint Investment Fund, which is targeting commitments of USD 250 million. Citadel Capital was founded in 2004 and only invests in MENA.

Swicorp is a corporate advisory and private equity group which provides intellectual and financial capital to domestic and international businesses active in MENA. The Saudi Arabia-based firm has offices in Riyadh, Jeddah, Geneva, Dubai, Tunis and Algiers. It has an estimated USD 265 million in dry powder and is currently raising a USD 400 million expansion fund by the name of Swicorp Intaj Capital II.

EFG-Hermes Private Equity was established in 1999 as the wholly owned subsidiary of the Egyptian investment bank, EFG-Hermes. The firm has a significant presence in the MENA region and in the past it has raised several venture vehicles focused exclusively on the region. EFG-Hermes Private Equity has raised private equity funds totalling USD 1.2 billion over the last decade and is currently raising the EFG-Hermes Syria Fund, which will target multiple sectors within the Syrian economy.
