Preqin’s Performance Analyst has performance data for over 5,260 funds private equity funds. In order to assess which private equity vehicles have performed the best, considering only vehicles with a fund size greater than USD 100 million, we have assessed funds with vintages of 2008 and older where at least 50% of the fund’s capital has been invested.
Using the IRR as the main measure of performance, we generated a list of top performing private equity funds across the asset classes. Looking at the top 20 performing funds, Matrix Partners V, a vintage 1998 venture fund, is top of the list. The majority of the list is made up of venture funds but it does include four buyout funds and a distressed debt fund – WLR Recovery Fund II.
Venture capital is a high-risk, high-potential-return sector, so it is unsurprising to find that when narrowing the list to the top 10, all the funds present are venture funds, with vintages prior to 1999.
