Top Five Private Equity Fund Managers Based in China

Fund Manager Profiles is the most extensive, detailed source of information on private equity fund managers in the world.  Preqin research shows that there are 682 private equity fund managers currently headquartered in Asia with 110 based in China.  Private equity fund managers located in China have raised private equity funds totalling over $24.5 billion in the last 10 years. Preqin data reveals that, in terms of total capital raised, the top five fund managers headquartered in China are SAIF Partners, Bohai Industrial Investment Fund Management Company, Hopu Investment Management, IDGVC Partners and New Horizon Capital.

SAIF Partners has raised $3.4 billion over the last decade and has invested in over 68 enterprises since its establishment in 2001. The firm tend to make early stage, special situation and expansion capital investments primarily in China, India, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The second fund manager on the list is Bohai Industrial Investment Fund Management Company, which was established by the Tianjin Municipal Government. It was set up to help transform the region’s economy and turn the northern port city into a powerful economic and financial hub. The fund manager has raised $2.5 billion since its formation in 2006.

Hopu Investment Management has raised an estimated $2.5 billion since 2007. The fund manager was founded through a joint venture between Fang Fenglei (Goldman Sachs China Partner) and Temasek Holdings and focuses on buyout investments in China.

IDGVC Partners and New Horizon Capital are the final two fund managers comprising the top five private equity fund managers headquartered in China and the firms have raised $1.5 billion each in the last 10 years. IDGVC Partners was founded in 1992 by International Data Group (IDG), a leading worldwide provider of information technology services. IDG and Accel Partners provide support with raising and establishing funds.  New Horizon Capital is a private equity firm focussing on growth and expansion stage investment opportunities. The firm closed their most recent fund, New Horizon Capital Fund III, in March of this year on $750 million and will be investing the capital in Chinese pharmaceuticals, consumer products, retail, consumer services, manufacturing, high-tech, chemicals and energy enterprises.
