Fund Manager Profiles is the most extensive, detailed source of information on private equity fund managers in the world. Preqin research shows that there are 1,354 private equity fund managers currently headquartered in Europe with 402 based in the UK. Private equity fund managers located in the UK have raised private equity funds totalling over $349 billion in the last 10 years. Preqin data reveals that, in terms of total capital raised, the top five fund managers headquartered in the UK are Apax Partners, Permira, Pantheon Ventures, 3i and Charterhouse Capital Partners.
Apax Partners has raised an estimated $32 billion over the last decade and employs around 300 people worldwide. The fund manager tends to invest in venture, buyout and balanced deals in which it can gain a controlling stake.
The second fund manager on the list is Permira was established in 1985. The fund manager has raised an estimated $21 billion over the last 10 years and closed its fourth and most recent buyout fund in 2006 on €9.6 billion.
Pantheon Ventures is an international fund of funds manager that has raised an estimated $18 billion over the last 10 years and is currently raising its first infrastructure fund of funds vehicle. The fund manager often launches region-specific funds, such as the three funds it is launching in 2010: Pantheon Asia Fund VI, Pantheon European Fund VII and Pantheon USA Fund IX.
3i and Charterhouse Capital Partners are the final two fund managers comprising the top five private equity fund managers headquartered in the UK and both firms have raised an estimated $13 billion each in the last 10 years. 3i has been listed on the London Stock Exchange since 1994 and is on the road with its second Indian Infrastructure Fund. Charterhouse Capital Partners is a purely buyout-focused firm, which prefers to invest in companies headquartered in Western Europe.
