Top 5 Private Equity Fund Managers Based in China

Preqin research shows that there are 1,125 private equity fund managers currently headquartered in Asia with 132 based in China.  Private equity fund managers located in China have raised private equity funds totalling over $34.3 billion in the last 10 years. Preqin data reveals that, in terms of total capital raised, the top five fund managers headquartered in China are Hony Capital, SAIF Partners, IDGVC Partners, Hopu Investment Management and GP Capital. 
Hony Capital, established in 2003, is focused on privatization and restructuring opportunities of State Owned Enterprises in traditional industries and other investment opportunities in private companies, distressed conglomerates and non-performing assets in the Greater China market. The fund manager has raised an estimated $3.9 billion over the last 10 years and is currently raising the CNY 10 billion Hony Capital RMB Fund II.
The second fund manager on the list is SAIF Partners has raised an estimated $3.9 billion over the last decade and has invested in over 100 enterprises since its establishment in 2001. The firm tend to invest in early stage, special situation and expansion capital investments primarily in China, India, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
IDGVC has raised an estimated $3.3 billion over the last 10 years. The fund manager was founded in 1992 by International Data Group, a leading worldwide provider of information technology services. The firm focuses on early to growth stage companies with a focus on hi-tech related sectors such as the internet, telecommunications, wireless communications, digital media, IC, and life science.
Hopu Investment Management and GP Capital are the final two fund managers comprising the top five private equity fund managers headquartered in China. The firms have raised an estimated $2.5 billion and $1.6 billion respectively in the last 10 years. Hopu Investment Management was founded in 2007 through a joint venture between Fang Fenglei (Goldman Sachs China Partner) and Temasek Holdings and currently focuses on buyout investments in China with no specific industry preferences. GP Capital Shanghai-based private equity firm that was established by Sig Asset Management and CICC Jia Cheng Investment Management as a 50/50 joint venture in July 2009. GP Capital manages the first financial sector focused private equity fund in China, Shanghai Financial Sector Investment Fund.
