Using Preqin’s Fund Manager Profiles we compiled a list of the 10 largest cities globally in terms of the number of venture firms.

As is true across the private equity spectrum, the majority of venture firms operate out of the US, with six of the top 10 cities in North America.

New York plays host to the largest number of venture firms, with 327 based in the region and the San Francisco Bay Area ranks second in the list with 315 venture firms.  As Europe’s main financial hub, London has 185 venture firms, making it the third-largest city.

Positions four to six are all taken by US cities; Boston, Los Angeles and Chicago, host 131, 87, and 81 venture firms respectively. Paris is ranked in seventh position with 75 venture firms considering the French capital their headquarter.

The final three cities on the list are Toronto, Sydney and Stockholm. Toronto and Sydney are home to 45 firms each, whilst the Swedish capital is Europe’s third-largest centre for venture capital with 43 firms.
