According to Preqin data there are 1,589 funds currently in the market seeking to raise $683bn. Data from Preqin’s Funds in Market product reveals the international and intermingled nature of the modern private equity industry. There are 748 funds focused on investing in North America targeting to raise $360.8bn, 395 focused on Europe seeking $156bn and 446 funds focused on Asia and Rest of World aiming to raise $166.3bn. When examining this data by GP location, North America-based fund managers are hoping to raise $397.5bn through 817 funds, European-based managers are raising 442 funds seeking $162.5bn and managers located in Asia and Rest of World are raising 330 funds, targeting $123bn in capital.

From this data we can see capital sought by GP location outweighs that targeted by fund geographic focus in both Europe and North America, indicating there are plans for outward investment from both regions. The opposite can be seen in the Asia and Rest of World region where 116 funds based outside the region seeking $ 43.3bn, 6.5% of total capital being sought, in capital to invest into the region.
