Since the release of Preqin’s cleantech publication in April the aggregate capital raised for pure cleantech funds has doubled. As of September 2009, nine pure cleantech private equity funds have raised $1.5 billion in capital over the course of 2009. The largest dedicated cleantech fund raised in 2009 is Element Partners II, a venture fund established to provide financing to high growth companies in the energy and clean technology markets. With $486 million raised, Element Partners II targets to invest in companies with innovative solutions to energy, industrial, and environmentally focused businesses. Element Partners started fundraising for their second fund in 2008 with an initial target of $400 million.

In terms of private equity funds on the road targeting exclusively the cleantech sector, there are currently over 70 funds targeting over $18 billion.  Hudson Clean Energy Partners is one of the largest private equity pure cleantech funds currently on the road targeting $1 billion in capital.
