In 2014, 263 managers completed fundraising for at least one venture capital fund, with a total of 279 venture capital funds holding a final close securing an aggregate $47.2bn. This blog will focus on the top 10 fund managers based on total capital raised in 2014 by venture capital funds; collectively, these managers accumulated $15.7bn in the year, a third of all capital raised by venture capital fund managers.
Founded in 2001, Tiger Global Management raised the largest amount of capital for venture capital investments by closing two funds in 2014; the firm has an estimated $5.1bn available in dry powder. The firm invests in public and private equity markets across the globe, with a primary focus on the US, China, India, Southeast Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. It focuses on late stage and growth investments in the technology, telecommunications, media, energy and retail sectors.
Via the final closing of Deerfield Private Design Fund III, Deerfield Management raised the second largest amount of capital for venture capital investments in 2014. Founded in 1994, the firm provides venture capital and growth capital to new enterprises with a focus on biotechnology, healthcare services, medical devices and pharmaceutical sectors.
Andreessen Horowitz and Healthcare Royalty Partners both secured $1.5bn for their respective venture capital vehicles that reached a final close in 2014. Andreessen Horowitz has an estimated $2.5bn in dry powder and focuses on seed to growth stage technology-related investments across North America. With an estimated $1.4bn in uncalled capital, Healthcare Royalty Partners’ investments span the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device/diagnostics sectors. There are currently 610 venture capital funds in market being raised by a total of 574 fund managers. Insight Venture Partners IX, targeting $2.75bn, is one of the largest venture capital funds in market.
