Preqin data reveals that there are currently 53 firms operating from South Africa. The database shows that collectively, these firms have raised over USD 6.7 billion in private equity capital over the last 10 years, and have over USD 2.3 billion available in dry powder.
The majority of the firms are based in Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city. Out of 53 firms, over 30 are located in central Johannesburg or in nearby areas such as Sandton, Illovo and Bryanston. Three firms are based in Cape Town while two are headquartered in Bellville.
Preqin’s extensive research shows that one of the top private equity firms, according to total funds raised over the last decade, is Pamodzi Investment. The Melrose North-based firm has raised $1.3 billion since 2000 and tends to invest in resources and resource-enabling infrastructure opportunities. The firm was incorporated in 1996 and is wholly black-owned and controlled.
Brait Private Equity is one of the largest independent private equity fund managers in South Africa. The firm has raised over $868 million in the last 10 years and has managed eight different funds since 1991. The Illovo-based Ethos Private Equity has raised funds totalling over $769 million in the last decade and is currently raising Ethos Private Equity VI.
