There are currently 107 private equity real estate funds in market that will look to invest in retail assets as part of their investment strategy. These funds are targeting aggregate commitments of $72.6 billion. Of the funds, 17 are specifically focused on investments in retail properties and are seeking aggregate commitments of $7.8 billion. Of the retail-specific funds in market, 11 are focused on Europe, targeting $5.4 billion (€3.9 billion). There are four Asia and Rest of Word funds in market, seeking commitments of $1.7 billion and three North American funds on the road, targeting $0.7 billion in commitments. Although there are 47 North American funds in market that incorporate retail investments, just three are solely focused on the property type.
21 retail-specific real estate funds closed during 2008-2009, receiving $5.6 billion in commitments. 12 of these were North America focused vehicles, which raised an aggregate$2.8 billion. Seven Europe focused funds raised $2.1 billion (€1.3 billion) and two Asia and Rest of World funds raised $0.7 billion.
