Of the entire private real estate fund manager universe, 11% are based in Continental Europe. Fundraising by these managers has increased over the years, totalling almost $30bn in investor commitments between 2004 and 2009.
14 of these Continental European fund managers are headquartered in Germany, the country that is home to more Continental European private real estate firms than any other country. Italy and Sweden are joint second, with nine private real estate firms headquartered in both. They are closely followed by France, the Netherlands and Russia, with eight firms based in each country.
Of the Continental European fund managers, Netherlands-based ING Real Estate Investment Management has raised the most capital for private real estate funds in the last 10 years. France-based AEW Europe and AXA Real Estate Investment Managers are second and third respectively. BNP Paribas Real Estate Investment Management Italy and Sweden’s Aberdeen Property Investors are fourth and fifth.
