Preqin’s Funds in Market database shows there are currently 610 private equity funds in market focused on investing outside of Europe and North America. Collectively these vehicles are aiming to raise an aggregate $193bn in capital commitments. Of all the funds in market targeting private equity investment opportunities outside of Europe and North America, Asia is the most popular region for investment, with 388 funds aiming to raise an aggregate $129bn for investment in the region. This is followed by funds focused on investing in Latin America, which consists of the Caribbean, South America and Central America. This region accounts for 10% of the aggregate targeted capital and 10% of the number of funds in market.
The largest fund by target size to focus on investments outside of North America and Europe is Asia-focused KKR Asia Fund II. Managed by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, the fund aims to raise $6bn in capital commitments intended for management buyouts and growth equity investments, and mostly concentrates on Japan, China and Australia.
BTG Pactual Brazil Infrastructure Fund II is the largest fund in market investing in Latin America. The private equity infrastructure fund, managed by BTG Pactual, seeks $1.5bn in capital commitments for the development of infrastructure in the energy, transportation and utilities sectors; it is primarily focused on Brazil, but also invests throughout South America.
Pan African Infrastructure Development Fund II, managed by Harith, is the largest Africa-focused vehicle in market. The private equity infrastructure fund is targeting $1.2bn for investment in infrastructure projects in the telecommunications, energy, transport, water and sanitation sectors.
The largest fund in market seeking investment opportunities within the Middle East and Israel is the Dubai Real Estate Fund. Jointly sponsored by Dubai International Capital and Brookfield Asset Management, the private equity real estate fund aims to raise $1bn in capital commitments for investment in Dubai.
As of November 2012, 191 private equity funds investing outside of Europe and North America have achieved a final close. Combined, these funds have raised an aggregate $52bn. The largest fund investing outside of Europe and North America to reach a final close so far this year is Mount Kellett Capital Partners II. The $4bn special situations fund managed by Mount Kellett Capital Management invests across Asia, with a specific focus on India and China.
