In the last month, F&C Private Equity announced a first close for its clean technology focused fund of funds vehicle, F&C Climate Opportunity Partners. The fund of funds, which has raised €30mn from three institutional investors thus far, focuses on nine sectors: alternative energy, energy efficiency, sustainable mobility, waste, advanced materials, forestry and agriculture, water, acclimatisation and supporting services. It will seek to build a portfolio consisting of 12-15 underlying fund investments.
Preqin is tracking eight other private equity funds of funds with a clean technology focus seeking capital currently. One such vehicle is Macquarie Clean Technology Fund II, which is managed by Macquarie Funds Group. The vehicle will focus on private equity funds that invest in companies that are looking to lower the cost - and reduce the negative environmental impact - of energy use. It will focus on sustainability and invest in areas such as wind and solar power, pollution abatement and environmental technology.
Another clean technology focused fund of funds vehicle currently seeking capital is PCG Cleantech Fund II managed by PCG Asset Management. It focuses on energy, water and material technologies, products and services that reduce carbon emissions, conserve natural resources and improve energy efficiency. Half of its capital is allocated to fund investments, with the other half available for direct or co-investments in clean technology companies.
