Southeast Asia refers to two geographic regions: the mainland section includes Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia whilst the maritime section consists of Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore. Preqin holds information for over 100 private equity fund managers located across this region and provides details of over 30 funds currently being raised by Southeast Asia-located firms. Preqin data reveals that Southeast Asia-based fund managers have raised USD 15.4 billion over the last decade and are currently raising funds targeting over USD 8 billion.
Preqin’s Fund Manager Profiles product shows that Singapore is the most populated Southeast Asian country in terms of fund managers, with 59 firms headquartered on the island. Templeton Asset Management is one of the largest firms based in the country having raised over USD 400 million in the last decade. The firm is affiliated with America’s Franklin Templeton Investments and acts as its regional hub for Asia. At the beginning of 2010, Templeton Strategic Emerging Market Fund III closed on USD 180 million targeting expansion opportunities in emerging markets.
Dragon Capital Group is an integrated financial services provider with an exclusive focus on Vietnam's capital markets. The firm was established in 1994 and it has raised over USD 500 million in the last 10 years. Headquartered in Ho Chi Ming City, the firm is currently raising Dragon Capital Vietnam Third Wave Private Equity Fund, which is a growth and special situations fund aiming to raise USD 350 million.
Northstar Pacific is one of Indonesia’s largest private equity fund managers and it currently holds an estimated USD 170 million in dry powder. In March 2010, the firm closed Northstar Equity Partners II fund on USD 285 million. The fund was raised in order to make strategic investments primarily in Indonesian companies.
