Preqin’s Fund Manager Profiles shows that there are currently 482 private equity fund managers headquartered in the UK. Collectively, these firms have raised approximately €262bn in capital over the past ten years, and there is an estimated €61bn available in dry powder to these firms for investment. The vast majority of these firms are headquartered in London; 380 of the 482 firms are based in the capital, accounting for 79% of all firms. These 380 firms have raised approximately €249bn in capital over the past 10 years, which represents approximately 95% of all capital raised over the past 10 years by UK-based fund managers.
The top five largest UK-based fund managers by total capital raised over the past decade are CVC Capital Partners, Apax Partners, Permira, BC Partners and 3i. Alone these five firms have raised roughly €85bn in capital over this period, accounting for approximately 32% of total capital garnered by the 482 UK-headquartered fund managers. All of these GPs are based in London, make investments worldwide and have diversified industry sector focuses. Buyout is the main fund strategy for all five of these fund managers, and they collectively have approximately €14bn in dry powder available for investment.
CVC Capital Partners is the largest UK-based fund manager by total capital raised over the past 10 years, with approximately €25bn garnered and €3bn in dry powder available for investment. The firm has offices located across Europe, Asia and North America and has raised both Europe-focused and Asia Pacific-focused funds, across a wide variety of industry sectors.
Apax Partners also has offices located across Europe, Asia and North America. It has raised a total of €21bn over the past decade and has available estimated dry powder of €4bn. The firm has previously raised buyout, balanced and venture capital funds, but no longer considers venture capital investments.
