There are currently 710 North American-focused funds being raised, seeking an aggregate $281 billion in capital commitments. Real estate funds account for the largest number of funds on the road, with 217 currently seeking capital, and are also targeting the largest aggregate amount of capital - $70 billion. Venture funds are the second most numerous, with 160 currently raising, followed by buyout funds with 99. Venture funds are targeting an aggregate $27 billion and buyout funds have an aggregate target of $56 billion.
In 2010 to date there have been 126 final closes achieved by North American-focused funds, with a total of $90.5 billion in capital commitments. The largest amount of capital has been raised by buyout funds: 18 such funds have closed during the year with a total of $26 billion in commitments. 33 venture funds have raised $11 billion and 25 real estate funds have closed with $18 billion in commitments.
The largest fund currently on the road is Morgan Stanley Capital Partners V, which has a target of $6 billion. This buyout fund, launched in 2008, is expected to invest globally, making portfolio investments of between $100 million and $500 million per portfolio company.
The largest fund to closeso far this year is Blackstone Capital Partners VI, which achieved a final close of $13.5 billion. This fund will invest globally in a wide range of industries.
