Preqin’s extensive research shows there are currently 155 private equity firms located in the Nordic region. The latest data from the Fund Manager Profiles database shows that collectively these firms have raised USD 61 billion in capital commitments over the last 10 years and have EUR 13 billion available in dry powder.
Of these 155 firms, 61 are based in Sweden and 36 in Finland collectively accounting for 63% of all Nordic private equity firms. The top five fund managers located within the region, by total capital raised over the last 10 years, are EQT Partners, Nordic Capital, Altor, CapMan Capital Management and Herkules Capital.
EQT Partners is a group of leading private equity funds operating in Europe, Asia and the US. The firm specialises in buyouts, growth financing, special situations and infrastructure investments within a diverse range of industries and sectors. EQT Partners has raised EUR 12.2 billion in the past decade and currently has an estimated EUR 4 billion in dry powder. The firm is currently raising their EQT VI Fund which invests exclusively in the Nordic region and German speaking Europe. The fund held its first close on EUR 3.5 billion in July 2011 and is targeting EUR 4.25 billion in total.
Nordic Capital is a private equity firm concentrating on Nordic and Northern Europe-based investment. Founded in 1989, the firm focuses investment in large and mid-market companies operating within a range of sectors but have specific interest in the healthcare. The firm have raised EUR 6.7 billion over the past 10 years and currently has an estimated EUR 1.4 billion in available dry powder.
Altor is a private equity firm investing in mid-market companies throughout the Nordic region. Founded in 2003, the firm invests in a diverse range of industries providing buyout and growth investment to Nordic-based firms. Altor has raised EUR 3.4 billion in aggregate capital over the last decade and currently has EUR 1.5 million in dry powder.
