The endowment is to get its money back after a fund manager failed to meet the conditions of the commitment. Merton College Endowment has opted to take this option to help it reduce its allocation level to real estate which is higher than it would like it to be. As a result of it’s over allocation to real estate, Merton College will not make any further private equity real estate fund commitments for at least the next year.

More information on real estate fundraising is availible in the newly released 2009 Preqin Private Equity Real Estate Review.
