Preqin currently tracks 215 investment consultants that offer services covering the infrastructure asset class. Alternatives investment consultants offer specialist and comprehensive advice through their understanding of the alternatives universe, providing a vital source of intelligence for both investors and fund managers alike.

Although comparatively smaller than the more utilized asset types such as private equity, the infrastructure asset class still possesses a sizeable capital base, with infrastructure investment consultants on Preqin’s Infrastructure Online service possessing median infrastructure assets under advisement of $600mn. According to The Q3 2014 Preqin Quarterly Update: Infrastructure, institutional investor appetite towards the infrastructure asset class has continued to increase, with 57% of investors planning to commit more capital to the asset class in 2015.

The majority (57%) of infrastructure consultants are based in North America, with Europe possessing 36% of consultants. With regards to the nature of their service, infrastructure consultants offer discretionary only (6%), non-discretionary only (35%) and both discretionary and non-discretionary (59%) services. 

In terms of the largest infrastructure assets advised, Frontier Advisors leads the way with AUD 23bn. Established in July 2000, the consulting firm provides non-discretionary services and independent investment advice to superannuation funds, redundancy trusts, endowment funds and preservation funds throughout Australia and New Zealand. The firm advises broadly across the asset class, covering both core economic sectors and social sectors. Encompassing all stages of the asset class, the firm oversees investments across the stages of greenfield, brownfield and secondary stage.
